Latex manufacturers call them "funny condoms", but some consumer regulators think they're a bad joke.
Funny condoms were the bulk of the 1 million genital sheaths recently pulled off the consumer market in the Czech Republic by officials with the Czech Trade Inspectorate COI.
Inspectors ruled that package instructions for the condoms, worth about 23 million koruna (1 million dollars), failed to include adequate health warnings to consumers.
Unlike standard condoms with a tight fit, funny condoms cannot prevent conception nor protect against sexually transmitted disease. Consumer laws in many countries require latex makers to clearly state these facts on funny condom packages.
"Because of their character, it is impossible to treat them as a means of health protection," said COI spokeswoman Miloslava Fleglova. "Their reliability cannot be guaranteed."
Czech manufacturers Erco and Vulkan are among the world's largest makers of funny condoms.
The more than 100 styles in Erco's catalogue range from a marijuana leaf to a kangaroo. Vulkan's 31 styles include a beer mug and a soccer ball.
Similarly unreliable, officials say, are the "musical" and "flashing light" condoms currently on the European market.
