Jordan says offer from French nuclear giant Areva's "encouraging"

Amman - Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) chairman Khalid Touqan on Tuesday described as 'encouraging' an offer presented to the government by French nuclear group Areva giant for the development of Jordan's nuclear energy programme. The proposal, outlining Areva's contribution of among others the construction of two nuclear reactors, was put forward during a the third meeting of the joint Jordanian-French nuclear cooperation committee on Monday. 'The JAEC found Areva's offer to have encouraging and competitive advantages in terms of pricing, financial contributions and cost of electricity generation,' Touqan was quoted as saying by the Jordan Times. Jordan signed a nuclear cooperation agreement with France in August 2008. Jordan's first nuclear power plant, expected to be a Generation III reactor with a capacity of around 1,000 megawatts, is slated for construction about 20 kilometres south-east of the Red Sea port of Aqaba. The country also plans to build three more plants within the next 30 years.
