Thai manufacturing output down 16.5 per cent in first half of 2009

Bangkok - Thailand saw manufacturing fall 16.5 per cent the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2008, but expects to see it return to positive territory by the end of the year, according to government figures released Wednesday. The country's manufacturing production index (MPI) fell 22 per cent the first quarter and 10.7 per cent the second quarter for a total 16.5-per-cent fall the first six months of 2009, Industrial Economic Office Director-General Arthit Vuthikaro said. The MPI is expected to fall about 5 per cent the third quarter than bounce back into positive growth of 3.7 per cent in the fourth quarter, and for the year fall between 8 and 10 per cent. It rose 3.9 per cent last year.
