Tokyo stocks down on US, European jobless rates (Roundup)

Tokyo - Stocks fell in Tokyo Friday after US and European unemployment rates provoked concerns over the global economic recovery. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average lost 60.08 points, or 0.61 per cent, to close at 9,816.07. The broader-based Topix index was also down 3.4 points, or 0.37 per cent, at 920.62. The Tokyo market's losses followed Wall Street's overnight falls as reports said the US unemployment rate marked a 26-year high and the European Union jobless rate hit its highest in 10 years. For the week, the Nikkei fell 0.62 per cent and the Topix also dipped 0.67 per cent. On currency markets at midday (0300 GMT), the dollar traded at 95.90-95 yen, down from Thursday's 5 pm quote of 96.65-67 yen. The euro traded at 1.3990-95 dollars, down from late Thursday's quote of 1.4089-91 dollars, and at 134.22-27 yen, down from 136.17-21 yen.
