Tokyo stocks down on profit taking ahead of US economic data (Roundup)

Tokyo - Tokyo stocks fell Thursday as investors tried to lock in profits before the release of key US employment data. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average dipped 63.78 points, or 0.64 per cent, to close at 9,876.15. The broader-based Topix index was also down 4.28 points, or 0.46 per cent, at 924.02. The market opened with positive sentiment after a series of economic data showed improvement in manufacturing in the United States, China and Europe. But investors soon retreated to the sidelines while they waited for more cues of economic recovery. On currency markets at midday (0300 GMT), the dollar traded at 96.61-66 yen, down from Wednesday's 5 pm quote of 96.77-79 yen. The euro traded at 1.4113-18 dollars, up from late Wednesday's quote of 1.4077-80 dollars, and at 136.37-42 yen, up from 136.24-28 yen.
