Taiwan inflation drops to 0.08 per cent in May

Taipei - Taiwan's inflation rate fell for the fourth consecutive month to 0.08 per cent in May from the same month a year earlier, mainly because of falling oil prices, the government statistics agency said Friday. 'Although oil prices have risen in recent months, compared with the same month last year, oil product prices in May still dropped considerably,' said Wu Chao-ming, a spokesman for the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics. Wu said while the decline in oil prices pushed down transport fares, charges for overseas sightseeing trips were cut drastically mainly due to the global downturn and the recent H1N1 flu pandemic, which discouraged people from travelling. He said except for food prices which rose 3.02 per cent year-on-year, most other prices, including those of consumer electronic products dropped, thus pushing down the overall consumer price index.
