Thailand's exports slide 26.1 per cent in April

Bangkok - Thailand's exports fell 26.1 per cent in April, declining in all markets except South Asia, the Commerce Ministry disclosed Wednesday. April's exports were valued at 10.4 billion dollars, down 26.1 per cent year-on-year, while imports reached 9.8 billion dollars, down 36.3 per cent, leaving the kingdom with a 600-million-dollar trade surplus. Thailand's exports during the first four months of 2009 amounted to 44.2 billion dollars, down 21.9 per cent, while imports were 36.5 billion dollars, amounting to a trade surplus of 7.7 billion dollars. 'Exports to every major market were down in April,' Commerce Ministry Permanent Secretary Amporn Kitti-Amporn said. Exports to the European Union were down 35.1 per cent, and to South-East Asia down 33.4 per cent. Exports to Japan declined 29.8 per cent and to the US market 28.7 per cent. Thailand's exports to certain 'niche markets,' such as South Asia, were up, Amporn said. Exports to South Asia grew 8.5 per cent in April, with exports to India up 4.4 per cent, he noted.
