Singapore's SingTel expands regional customer base by 35 per cent

Singapore - Singapore Telecommunications Ltd, or SingTel, South-East Asia's biggest telecommunications company, on Wednesday posted annual growth of 35 per cent in its regional mobile phone customer base despite the global economic downturn. As of March 31, the number of mobile phone subscribers increased by 64 million from a year earlier to 249.4 million, the company said. SingTel counts customers in Australia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. SingTel's six regional associates - India's Bharti, Indonesia's Telkomsel, Globe Telecom of the Philippines, Thailand's Advanced Info Service, Pacific Bangladesh and Pakistan's Warid Telecom - reported double-digit customer growth of 10 to 52 per cent from a year ago. Among the associates, India's leading mobile phone operator, Bharti, posted the biggest jump, reaching 93.9 million customers as of March 31, the company said. SingTel said it would report its results for the fourth quarter and the past fiscal year, which ended March 31, on Thursday. Net profit for the third quarter fell 16.1 per cent year-on-year to 799 million Singapore dollars (547 million US dollars).
