Study: Lost laptops cost companies 50,000 dollars each

Los Angeles - A top of the line laptop may cost only a few thousand dollars, but losing even a cheap laptop costs companies an average of 50,000 dollars according to a new study done for chip giant Intel. The study found the cost of a data breach to be by far the largest cost associated with a laptop loss, accounting for some 80 per cent of the typical cost- or about 39,000 dollars. Such data breaches can compromise company and customer information and companies must take extensive steps to prevent and correct misuse of the data. 'Employees are carrying more information on their laptops than ever before,' the poll taker - The Ponemon Institute - said in a statement. 'With each lost laptop there is the risk that sensitive data about customers, employees and business operations will end up in the wrong hands.' The study, which examined 138 laptop losses in 28 companies and government agencies, found that laptops losses increased in relation to the level of the worker, and with the length of time that passes until the loss is discovered. Besides the cost of rectifying the data breach, lost intellectual property added nearly 5,000 dollars to the average cost while the rest of the estimated expense was associated with such things as investigative costs, lost productivity and replacing the laptop.
