Mazda takes catalytic converter technology to Germany

Cologne, Germany - Mazda is to offer its single nano technology, a new design for catalytic converters, to German car buyers this year, the Japanese carmaker said Monday. Mazda, which says it is the first in the world to use the design in mass-produced cars, announced in Cologne that the technology would be available from this spring with the 2-litre petrol engine of the new Mazda 3 model sold in Germany. The company said the technology makes removal of pollutants by the converter even more effective. The car's emissions would be 75 per cent lower than legal limits set out in European Union law. Mazda is to gradually implement the technology in other models for Germany. The company said that in addition to the reduced emissions, the technology also reduces the use of the precious metals platinum and palladium in the converters, reducing manufacturing costs.
