Romania's inflation rate at three-year high

Bucharest - Romania's year-on-year inflation rate rose to 9.0 per cent in July, a three-year high paced by higher energy costs, the government said Monday. While food prices fell 0.7 per cent from June, natural gas prices jumped 12.5 per cent and electricity prices rose 4.5 per cent, the National Statistical Institute said. Romania, which joined the European Union in 2007, has one of the highest inflation rates in the 27-nation bloc. Only Bulgaria and the three Baltic nations had bigger rises in consumer prices in June.
