India's VSNL to construct new cable network to connect with Europe

New Delhi - Indian telecommunications major Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) is constructing a 250-millon-dollar cable system linking industrial hub Mumbai directly with Paris, London and Madrid through Egypt, a company release said Wednesday. VSNL, formerly a state-run company now controlled by the Tata Group, is constructing the new cable system in partnership with Seacom and Telecom Egypt. 'The TGN Eurasia Cable System will offer express connectivity between India and Europe and will also have future options for additional connectivity in the Gulf region as well as multiple locations in Europe,' the release said. The TGN Eurasia cable system, coupled with VSNL's plan to build an intra-Asia cable system announced earlier, was part of the company's efforts to offer seamless global connectivity at affordable prices, VSNL's president for global data solutions, Vinod Kumar, said. VSNL announced in November that it would be building a 200-million-dollar intra-Asia submarine cable linking Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and the Philippines.
