No decision yet on bid for Alitalia, says Lufthansa

Frankfurt - German carrier Lufthansa said Thursday that it is still considering a bid for Italy's ailing airline Alitalia. 'No decision has been made,' a spokeswoman said, following media reports that Air France-KLM had made a non-binding offer for the Italian carrier. German financial daily Handelsblatt reported Thursday that Lufthansa chief executive Wolfgang Mayrhuber wanted to make a bid but has run into opposition from the supervisory board. Chairman Juergen Weber and employees representatives on the Lufthansa board were against a takeover of the loss-making airline, the report said. But the paper pointed out that the CEO did not need the board's approval to make a non-binding offer. Analysts expect the German airline to make an offer soon. The Italian government has been seeking for some time to offload the bulk of its 49.9 per cent stake in the unprofitable Alitalia. An auction in July collapsed because no-one placed a bid.
