Lufthansa still considering bid for Alitalia

Munich - German carrier Lufthansa is still considering a bid for the Italian airline Alitalia, Lufthansa's chief financial director Stephan Gemkow said on Tuesday. Gemkow said no final decision had been taken. 'The matter remains open, nothing has changed,' he said. He said Italy was a good market for business travel in Europe and as such was of interest to the German airline. Lufthansa chief executive Wolfgang Mayrhuber said recently that he expected a decision would be made before the end of December. Italy was an important market, he said, but Alitalia had 'a multitude of problems.' The Italian government has been seeking for some time to offload the bulk of its 49.9 per cent stake in the unprofitable airline. An auction in July collapsed because no-one placed a bid. In addition to Lufthansa, Air France-KLM and Italy's AirOne have been mentioned as possible buyers. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
