France's trains and metros running again, opera continues strike

Paris - Public transport in France was returning to normal on Saturday after a 10-day strike had come to an end. Only staff at the Paris opera said they would continue strike action until the end of next week. They are protesting having to work two years longer before reaching retirement and have pointed out difficult working conditions. Culture Minister Christine Albanel called on the unions to be responsible. 'Actions like this damage the opera's reputation and show a scandalous inconsiderateness towards the public,' Albanel said. French President Nicholas Sarkozy meanwhile has presented himself as the conflict's victor. 'I have promised reforms and pushed them through,' he said. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
