More transport disruption in Paris as workers vote on ending strike

Paris - Commuters in the greater Paris area faced another day of limited metro and bus service Thursday as rank-and-file union members prepared to vote on ending a strike that has disrupted public transportation in the capital and train service throughout France for nine days. About one of three or four scheduled metro trains were running early Thursday, with bus service operating at about 70 per cent of normal capacity, the RATP urban transit system said. This represented a slight improvement over previous days. The SNCF national railway network said that about two of three scheduled high-speed TGV trains were operating Thursday, with service in other long-haul and regional rail systems also slowly returning to normal. Rank-and-file members of the powerful CGT union in 48 localities have voted to go back to work after negotiations on ending the impasse over a proposed pension reform opened on Wednesday, the union said. Other striking union members were set to vote later Thursday on returning to work and ending a job action that has cost the French economy several hundred million euros, according to preliminary government estimates. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
