Branson airline steps up fare war in New Zealand

Wellington - New Zealand's newest domestic airline, Pacific Blue, part-owned by British tycoon Richard Branson's Virgin Group, stepped up a price war Friday by offering flights for only 9 New Zealand dollars (6.75 US dollars) on the country's main trunk routes. Pacific Blue announced it would sell 3,000 seats at 9 dollars each for flights on November 12-13 between Auckland, Wellington and the South Island's main city Christchurch. 'For less than the price of a pizza delivery, thousands of Kiwis have the chance to be among the first guests on our new domestic services,' said the airline's general manager Adrian Hamilton-Manns. He said that more than 100,000 New Zealanders had already bought 39-New-Zealand-dollar fares for flights starting November 15, prompting Air Zealand and Australia's Qantas Airways to lower their prices to match. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
