Hands-free can opener is ranked alongside iPod for design genius

Hong Kong - A hands-free can opener made by a Hong Kong company has won an international design award after selling seven million worldwide in the past year, a news report said Thursday. The battery-operated can opener, a huge hit with left-handed people who have trouble using normal can openers, has won the gold award at the International Design Excellence Awards in San Francisco. Previous winners of the prestigious global award include the Apple iPod and the Motorola Razr phone, the South China Morning Post reported. The 20 US dollar battery-operated gadget made by Hong Kong-based Daka Development was originally designed for the elderly but proved an unexpected hit with left-handed people, the newspaper reported. Daka chairman Pat Mah, who will receive the gold award at a ceremony on October 20, told the newspaper: 'When I found out we had won, I was really excited.
