CME set to acquire CBOT, create largest derivatives market

New York - Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings and the Chicago Board of Trade Holdings hoped to finalize their merger in the coming days after shareholders in both companies approved the creation of the world's largest derivatives market. The two Chicago companies said Monday night that both sides had approved CME's acquisition of CBOT for 11.3 billion dollars, though the vote still had to be certified by an independent board before the merger could go ahead. That certification was expected to come in the next few days. Regulators have already given their go-ahead for the combined company, to be called CME Group Inc. 'With this successful vote, we are one step closer to realizing our vision,' CME chief executive Craig Donohue said in a statement. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
