Shopping disputes top tourism complaints in Hong Kong

Hong Kong - More than 400 complaints have been lodged about travel agencies in the first nine months of 2006 with disputes over shopping tours topping the list, the Travel Industry Council said Saturday. The disclosure of the figures came after a series of high-profile wrangles between tourist groups from China and travel agents over the way the groups were forced to shop. In a recent case, one Chinese tourist group was abandoned by its tour guide after it was claimed the group had not spent enough money shopping. Tour guides get commission on shop sales. The council imposed tough conditions on tour guides and travel agents to avoid these shopping related disputes. But council chairman Ronnie Ho denied claims Saturday that the council has been unfair to tour guides by imposing these stringent controls, which include publishing full details of tours and commissions. Forced to shop. hahaha reminds me of a Barry Kliban cartoon 'Stop n Eat', showing a roadside open-air diner and customers being forced to eat barbecue chicken by troops on duty.
