12 people rescued at sea in Philippines after boat capsizes

Manila - Four Japanese nationals and eight Filipinos were rescued by fishermen after their motorized boat capsized in rough seas in the central Philippines, the government said Tuesday. The National Disaster Coordinating Council said the victims were sailing to Camotes Island from nearby Cebu City, 585 kilometres south of Manila, when the boat was battered by strong winds and huge waves. The agency said a nearby fishing boat was able to quickly pluck the 12 victims out of the water. They were brought to a clinic on Camotes Island for treatment of minor injuries. Heavy rain and high winds brought on by the south-west monsoon have been battering a large portion of the Philippines since last weekend, causing floods and landslides. In the northern province of Zambales, some roads were closed by floods and six villages were inundated, forcing hundreds of people to flee their homes. The weather bureau warned of more heavy rains in the coming days after a low pressure area was spotted 230 kilometres west of the northern city of Dagupan.
