Philippine police rescue kidnapped 4-year-old boy

Manila - Philippine police officers rescued a 4-year-old boy who was abducted last month in a southern city, a police spokesman said Tuesday. The boy, the son of a Filipino-Chinese trader, was unharmed when he was rescued Monday evening in Datu Odin Sinsuat town in Maguindanao province, 960 kilometres south of Manila, Superintendent Danilo Bacas said. He said the kidnappers had abandoned the boy at their hideout as police officers surrounded the area. 'When the kidnappers detected that our officers were in their area, they scampered and left behind the boy,' he said. 'The victim is in good health.' The boy was abducted June 25 while on his way home from school in nearby Cotabato City. The kidnappers were believed to be members of a syndicate that has been behind the separate abductions of three Filipino-Chinese hostages in the city and nearby areas since February. The three hostages were eventually freed unharmed after their families allegedly paid large sums of ransom to the kidnappers.
