Brake failure blamed for China train collision, report says

Beijing - Brake failure caused a collision between two trains in central China's Hunan province that killed at least three people and injured 63, state media said Tuesday. The brake failure Monday caused one of the trains to speed around a bend and crash off its rails into the second train, the official Xinhua news agency quoted Sun Jing, the general manager of the Guangzhou Railway Group, as saying. The out-of-control train went through a red signal at 55 kilometres per hour, said Sun, whose company operates both trains and the railway station where they collided. But the Ministry of Railways would not confirm the cause of the crash until it has completed its official investigation, Chen Hualan, the ministry's safety director, told the agency. The collision derailed seven carriages and the two locomotives at the station in Chenzhou city. Carriages from one of the trains destroyed a house and a shop near the station, killing two occupants of the shop. Six of the injured people were in serious condition at local hospitals, earlier reports said.
