Death toll rises to 17 in Indonesian coal mine blast

Jakarta - Rescue workers resumed search efforts Wednesday for at least 23 people trapped in a 150-metre mine shaft, after an explosion collapsed a coal mine in Indonesia's West Sumatra province, officials said. The death toll rose to 17 by Wednesday morning and nine others were also injured in the accident in Sawahlunto district on Tuesday, said Rustam Pakaya, head of the Health Ministry's crisis centre in Jakarta. 'At least 23 other miners were still trapped in the mine,' Pakaya said. Chief of Sawahlunto police Ano Munarto expressed hope that all people trapped in the mine could rescued Wednesday, the state-run Antara news agency quoted reported. Munarto said evacuation efforts resumed Wednesday morning after being halted shortly after midnight. A methane explosion collapsed the mine operated by a private coal company PT Dasrat Sarana on Tuesday. Indonesia has some of the world's largest coal deposits and the country is a major coal exporter. Sawahlunto is a coal mining hub and tourism destination.
