Nine killed, 32 trapped in Indonesia mine blast (Roundup)

Jakarta - At least nine people were killed and 32 others were trapped in a 150-metre mine shaft after an explosion collapsed a coal mine in Indonesia's West Sumatra province, a health official said. Nine people were also injured in the incident in Sawahlunto district, said Rustam Pakaya, head of the Health Ministry's crisis centre in Jakarta. Sawahlunto district police chief, Adjunct Commissioner Jasman, told Elshinta radio that the suspected cause was methane in the mine. A spokesman for Sawahlunto's general hospital said one victim was burned beyond recognition. Witnesses told the state-run Antara news agency that the explosion sent flames up to 50 metres. The mine is operated by PT Dasrat Sarana, a private coal mining company. Sawahlunto is a coal mining hub and tourism destination.
