6 killed, 20 trapped in Indonesia mine blast (2nd Lead)

Jakarta - At least six people were killed and 20 others were trapped in a 150-meter mine shaft after an explosion collapsed a coal mine in Indonesia's West Sumatra province, a local health official said. Eight people were also injured in the accident in Sawah Lunto district, said Ermawati, head of the local health office. Rescuers were trying to save about 20 people believed trapped in the mine shaft, she said. The mine is operated by PT Dasrat Sarana, a private coal mining company. Sawahlunto district police chief Adjunct Commissioner Jasman told Elshinta radio that the suspected cause was methane in the mine. He earlier said seven people were killed in the blast. A spokesman for Sawahlunto's general hospital said one victim was burned beyond recognition. Witnesses told state-run Antara news agency that the explosion sent flames up to 50 metres. 'There were up to 35 miners and four to five supervisors trapped in the mine,' said miner Ali Munaf, 55.
