Man slashes himself with knife in front of Hong Kong lawmakers

Hong Kong - A man stood up and slashed himself with a knife in front of legislators in the public gallery of Hong Kong's mini-parliament Wednesday. The unidentified man, who described himself as jobless and in debt, stood up as legislators debated questions on the environment and began slashing his arms and legs with a knife. During his bloody protest, he shouted that debt collectors had 'pushed him to the brink' and that he wanted to publicize his plight. He then threw papers onto the chamber floor. A legislator with medical training as a male nurse bandaged the man before an ambulance arrived to take to take him to hospital for treatment of the cuts. The sitting was suspended and the Lgislative Council's secretary general Pauline Ng said afterwards security should be stepped up to prevent future incidents. 'In the current (economic) situation), people are under a lot of stress and many of them would like to make their views known, especially to those in authority,' she said.
