Buckets of rain ease Australian drought (Roundup)

Sydney - Parts of Australia in drought for nine years were under water Thursday as Brisbane and the rest of south-east Queensland received four months' rain in one day. Damage from strong winds and flash flooding stretched 300 kilometres along the east coast. Brisbane had its biggest deluge since 1974, damaging roads, bridges and housing. During the worst of the storms, 75,000 customers were without power but an Energex spokesman said electricity had been restored to all but 3,600 homes and businesses. State Emergency Service spokesman Chad Tripp said that one man had died when he was hit with shards of glass when the driving rain shattered window panes. 'We've had power poles that have been snapped in half, and other parts of the network completely torn down by high winds,' he said. Queensland Premier Anna Bligh, who declared the area a disaster zone, said that water was pouring into reservoirs that had been at record low levels. 'It looks like we'll pay a very high price for getting water in our dams,' she said, declaring the south-east Queensland drought officially over. In 48 hours catchments in the state's south-east corner received enough rainfall to supply drinking water for more than a year.
