Australia's Alicia Molik retires from tennis

Sydney - Former world number eight Alicia Molik has retired from tennis, citing injuries and her struggle against the middle-ear virus vestibular neuronitis, news reports said Friday. The 27-year-old is the only Australian woman to be ranked in the top 10 in the past two decades. 'Injuries and niggles are part of being an athlete and you accept it, but every time you suffer a setback it's not just difficult physically but it's very emotionally draining as well,' Molik told Melbourne's The Age. She said she was quitting when she was young enough to start a new career. Molik won the last of her five career singles titles in Sydney in 2005 and also has an Olympic bronze medal and also French and Australian Open doubles titles.
