Excellent article. I was in Thailand for 6 months and its a beautiful country with friendly people. However the treatment of some minorities by the government is absolutely appalling and a great loss of face to the Thai people. The 'Padoung' tribes that are put on display in tourist villages in Northwestern Thailand are absolutely unacceptable. These people are kept in semi-slavery, constantly hounded by their Chinese-Thai handlers on the Thai side of the borde, and the Burmese junta on the other side. Any Padoung that are found in refugee camps or inside Burma are forcefully displaced and put on show to earn those tourist dollars. It was one of the saddest aspects of Thailand that I encountered, and I sincerely hope its a practice that is ended.
