China announces new talks with Dalai Lama envoy

Beijing - The Chinese leadership announced a new round of talks with envoys from Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama for the start of July, the official Xinhua news agency reported Sunday. The report did not provide an exact date for the planned talks. Beijing had cancelled talks originally scheduled for June, due to the massive earthquake of May 12. Representatives for both sides first met at the beginning of May in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen in reaction to the unrest in Tibet three-and-a-half months ago. At the time, they had agreed on a resumption of dialogue. According to Xinhua, the government spokesman called on the Dalai Lama to react positively to the moves by the Chinese central government.
