Vietnam detains five Thai fishing boats and crew

Hanoi - Vietnamese authorities detained five Thai fishing boats which violated Vietnamese territory, an official said Friday. The boats were in an area about 20 miles from Hon Khoai Island off the southernmost province of Ca Mau, according to Tran Xuan Nghiem, director of the Foreign Affairs Department of Kien Giang province. 'They are Thai fishing boats operating in Vietnamese waters,' Nghiem said. 'We have sent people to the area to confirm the exact location where they were fishing.' Nghiem said it was not clear how many fishermen were aboard the boats, but the local newspaper Nguoi Lao Dong reported there were 55, including 22 Thai nationals and 33 Cambodian nationals. 'We haven't decided what to do with the boats and the fishermen yet,' Nghiem said. He said the boats were being held in the same offshore area where they had been discovered.
