Hong Kong bakery makes extra dough by changing best-before dates

Hong Kong - Consumer watchdog agencies Saturday were investigating a Hong Kong bakery chain that altered best-before dates on its unsold bread. Staff in three outlets of Arome Bakery have admitted altering the best-before dates so that older loaves of bread could stay on sale a day longer before being thrown away. Bakery general manager Alfred Lee admitted that five or six staff had altered the dates on bread, after a Hong Kong newspaper exposed the practice. Lee said the workers would be given written warnings. 'They did it for the sake of the company, as they wanted to help us clear old stock,' Lee, whose bakery has 53 outlets, was quoted as saying in Saturday's South China Morning Post. Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety and Consumer Council have launched investigations into the bakery, and legislators want rules on best-before dates tightened to deter future incidents. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
