Singapore in push to become an Asian water technology hub

Singapore - The city-state's drive to emerge as an Asian hub of water technology intensified this week with three events, the Public Utilities Board said on Tuesday. The national water agency board is set to sign a pact on Wednesday with Toray, an established membrane supplier in Japan, to collaborate on research and development projects. The first one will focus on the use of nano-porous materials in membranes for water purification. A water-safety workshop in Singapore will be attended by representatives from Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos, while Singapore's is also participating in the first Asia Pacific Water Summit in Beppu, Japan. The workshop is the first under an agreement signed between the World Health Organization and Singapore in August to promote safe drinking water. The Asia Pacific Water Summit will seek commitments from the region's leaders to place more importance on water in their national development agendas. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
