Residents flee mudflows from Philippine volcano slope

Manila - More than 100 residents fled their homes in an eastern Philippine province on Tuesday as heavy rains triggered mudflows from a restive volcano, the government said. The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said 165 people residing on the slopes of Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon province, 405 kilometres south-east of Manila, were evacuated to safer areas. 'Due to continuous downpour of heavy rains along Bulusan Volcano area, ash and loose deposits from the upper slopes were mobilized which caused mudflows and floodings,' the NDCC said in a statement. Earlier in the month, Bulusan spewed thick ash clouds, but no casualties or damage were reported. The 1,565-metre Bulusan has been acting up since March 2006, but its activity has been limited to explosions of ash and steam.
