Mainland woman remanded in custody for dumping son in Hong Kong

Hong Kong - A woman from mainland China who abandoned her 9-year-old son after telling him to find his Hong Kong father has been remanded into custody pending sentencing, a newspaper reported Tuesday. Ye Jing, 34, who admitted child neglect, gave her son a photocopy of his father's Hong Kong identity card and a note containing a mobile telephone number before dumping him, the South China Morning Post said. Police found the tearful boy near the pier on Cheung Chau island, a 30-minute ferry ride from Hong Kong's central business district. The boy, who has not been named, told officers he had been born in Sichuan province and his mother had brought him to Hong Kong to look for his father because she did not want to take care of him. Ye was arrested when she later went to police to report her son missing. Magistrate Garry Tallentire, who adjourned sentencing until October 29 pending a background and psychology report, remanded Ye into custody while her son was taken into care. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
