Nicaragua stop-off for Taiwan's Chen is confirmed

Managua - Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian will visit Nicaragua as part of a Central American tour that includes stop-offs in Honduras and El Salvador, the government of Nicaragua confirmed Monday. Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos confirmed the visit during a briefing with reporters. Officials in the Taiwanese embassy in Managua said Chen will arrive Sunday and likely meet with President Daniel Ortega the following day. Chen was due to arrive in Honduras capital Tegucigalpa on Tuesday, where he will join a summit of Central American leaders. Chen's week- long trip is aimed at shoring up support among Taiwan's Central American allies. Ortega has assured Taiwan that his country will not follow the path of Costa Rica, which cut ties with Taiwan in June and established relations with China. Taiwan is recognized by only 24 countries, half of which are in Latin America and the Caribbean. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
