Two earthquakes measuring 4.1 and 6 on Richter scale hit Taiwan

Taipei - Two earthquakes measuring 4.1 and 6 on the Richter scale jolted Taiwan on Monday, but there was no report of damage or casualties. The first quake, measuring 4.1, struck Taitung, southeast Taiwan, at 8:40 pm (1240 GMT), with its epicenter 16.5 kilometres underground, the Seismological Observation Center said. The second, measuring 6, occurred at 9:40 pm. Its epicenter was at 32.9 kms off Hualian on the east coast, 29.6 km under the seabed. These two quakes were caused by the friction between the Philippine Plate and the Eurasian Plate. It is the normal release of seismological energy,' Kuo Kai-wen, director of the Seismological Observation Center, told reporters. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
