Attack on Chinese-owned oil company kills at least 74 (1st Lead)

Addis Ababa - At least 74 people were killed in an attack by unknown gunmen on a Chinese oil company in eastern Ethiopia Tuesday, Chinese state media reported. Some nine Chinese nationals and at least 65 Ethiopians were killed in the attack on the Zhongyuan Petroleum Exploration Bureau in the Horn of Africa country's Ogaden region. 'We have been attacked by unknown men this morning,' Xu Shuang, the director of Zhongyuan in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. The company was exploring for oil in the region, which is awash with weapons belonging to ethnic-Somali militants who seek to separate from Ethiopia. China's Xinhua news agency said some 200 unidentified armed men stormed the compound early Tuesday and engaged in a 50-minute gun battle with troops protecting the facility, located in Abole, some 120 kilometres from the regional capital Jijiga. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
