Cambodian court delays disgraced police chief's hearing

Phnom Penh - A Cambodian court Tuesday delayed a hearing scheduled to bring charges of the attempted murder of an electricity commission official against disgraced former police chief Heng Pov. Phnom Penh Municipal Court announced it would instead hear the case at a date to be set early next month. It gave no reason for the delay. The former Phnom Penh municipal police chief is already serving seven years for the illegal detention of a female prisoner and 18 years for his part in the murder of senior judge Sok Sethamony in 2003. When the latest case is heard, police are expected to allege Pov was responsible for the attempted murder of a state electricity official in 2005. Pov is accused of ordering the man shot after he failed to pay his electricity bills and the electricity commission cut his power off. The victim was allegedly heard arguing with Pov by telephone and was later shot three times at close range as he sat in his car but survived. Pov also faces a number of other counts including the attempted murder of the editor of one of the country's largest newspapers. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
