Thailand dreaming of a dry New Year

Bangkok - In a bid to reduce road deaths caused by drunk driving, Thailand's Ministry of Education has joins hands with local temperance groups to launch a 'New Year Without Alcohol' campaign, news reports said Sunday. 'People should celebrate the New Year's holiday with sufficient happiness and to offer gifts or hold parties which do not have alcoholic drinks,' Charuaypon Torranin, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education, told the Thai New Agency. The ministry is cooperating with two non-governmental organizations - the Thai Health Promotion Foundation and Stop Drink Network - to spread the good word to the public. The government recently forecast that there would be more than 400 deaths, mainly caused by drunk driving, during the New Year season. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
