I was disgusted to hear that Kevin Rudd, Australia's Prime Minister, was in favour of climbing Uluru.

I'm a 'white' Australian who is ashamed of the way Europeans have treated indigeneous people, and continue to show little understanding or respect to them. The closure of climbing Uluru would be such a sign of respect, and everyone would benefit.

When you travel to other countries, there is often a sign asking you to observe local cultural norms, such as removing shoes in temples.

At Uluru there is a sign asking people not to climb the rock. So why do some tour operators ( and many tourists) ignore this?

Peter Garrett gets it. Kevin Rudd, the cultural nerd, does not.

well all you culturally sensitive people, why don't you respect the culture of the Spanish with regard to the running of the bulls? Why don't you respect the Japanese who wish to hunt whales? Convenient to claim 'cultural sensitivity' when it suits you.
