Tegucigalpa/Managua - The Honduran government installed after last week's coup on Sunday denounced what it claimed were suspicious movements of Nicaraguan troops toward the Honduran border.
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said there were no such troop movements.
'We are not preparing any attack on Honduran garrisons on the border,' Ortega said.
Honduran former Congress speaker Roberto Micheletti, installed as head of the Tegucigalpa government after the June 28 coup, asked Ortega and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to 'stop attacking' Honduras. The two left-wing leaders are close allies of ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya.
'They have not crossed the border yet, but we are indeed seeing a mobilization (of troops,)' Micheletti said.
'Do not dare to cross the border, because we are willing to defend it.'
Micheletti made his remarks on television and on the radio as tens of thousands of Honduran citizens had gathered near Toncontin airport in the capital to await Zelaya's return, though the ousted president's flight was diverted to El Salvador by Honduran aviation authorities.
Micheletti's allegations are 'completely false,' Ortega said. 'They say we are provoking skirmishes, but they do not say where those skirmishes are.'
