Ventilator motor likely caused Mexican day care fire

Mexico City - A defective electric motor in a ventilator likely caused the fire at a day care centre that killed 44 children in Mexico City, an initial investigation showed Monday. The motor in a garage next door to the day care in the city of Hermosillo likely overheated or short circuited, said Abel Murrieta Gutierrez, head of Sonora state's justice department. The fire, which occurred Friday, then spread quickly and overtook the ABC day care centre. He also said another child had succumbed to burns on Monday, increasing the death toll to 44. Another 19 children between the ages of 3 months and 4 years were still being treated in hospital, with 13 in life threatening condition. Plastic foam insulation in the centre's roof helped it spread quickly, local media reports said. The dividing wall between the facilities also appears to have been unstable, Murrieta Gutierrez said. No charges have been filed.
