Madrid - Mexican poet Alejandro Aura has died in the Spanish capital Madrid at age 64, sources at the Mexican embassy said.
Aura, who directed the Mexican Culture Institute in Spain from 2001 until 2003, was suffering from cancer. He passed away at hospital Wednesday afternoon.
Many-sided Aura participated in the 1968 student movement and become known not only as an urban poet, but also as playwright, movie actor, radio and television presenter, newspaper columnist and gastronomy expert.
He won several Latin American literature awards including the Mexican National Poetry Prize for the work Volver a Casa (Returning Home) in 1973.
His other poetry included the volumes Tambor Interno (Internal Drum), Poeta en la Manana (Poet in the Morning), Jubilo (Rejoicing) and Se Esta Tan Bien Aqui (It Feels So Good to Be Here).
Aura's ashes were to be taken to Mexico, as he had wished.
