Police and demonstrators clash in Buenos Aires, 15 injured

Buenos Aires - Police and transport workers clashed Monday before the municipal legislature in Argentina's capital, leaving at least 11 officers and four demonstrators injured. The clashes happened during a demonstration of truck, taxi and bus drivers who wanted to enter the Buenos Aires legislature. City lawmakers were debating a bill proposing a points system for drivers' licences. Television footage showed at least one attack by a police officer on a man who was on the ground. The Argentine Interior Ministry suspended the officer. 'In the face of footage showing a police officer hitting an injured demonstrator, the minister ordered his identification and suspension,' a ministry spokesman said. Of the 11 injured officers, six received treatment on site, and five others were taken to a nearby hospital, the authorities said. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
