Bush seeks aid for Mexican efforts against drugs, crime (Roundup)

Washington/Mexico City - US President George W Bush asked Congress Monday for 500 million dollars in assistance for the Mexican government as part of efforts to combat drug trafficking and other organized crime. The spending request was the first under the Plan Mexico programme, expected to cost 1.4 billion dollars over the next few years. Bush was also seeking 50 million dollars for Central American governments. The money will be used for equipment, canine units, better technology and communications, training and surveillance aircraft. Bush included the spending in a 189-billion-dollar supplemental spending request mainly for the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. In a statement, the Mexican Foreign Ministry said that Bush and Mexican President Felipe Calderon had spoken Monday about the initiative. The Mexican government praised 'the commitment of President Bush to deepening actions in this matter and taking bilateral cooperation to a new stage,' the statement said.
