Peruvians complain of health problems after meteorite strike

Lima - A meteorite strike in south-eastern Peru has sparked complaints of health problems from residents in the high-altitude region near the border with Bolivia, the newspaper El Comercio reported Tuesday, citing authorities. In the Puno region, near Lake Titicaca, more than 10 people have complained of dizziness, headaches and nausea since a meteorite struck late Saturday in a scarcely populated area, according to eyewitnesses, leaving a 30-metre wide and 5-metre deep crater on the ground. A specialist is now set to take samples which will be studied in the capital, Lima. It cannot be ruled out that the remains of the meteorite are giving off radiation, the report said. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
