Quake at 6.2 magnitude shakes south-western Colombia (Roundup)

Bogota - An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale left four people injured and caused damage to some 30 houses in south-western Colombia, the authorities said Monday. The Colombian Institute of Geology and Mining (Ingeominas) said that the epicentre of the quake that happened late Sunday was 56.1 kilometres north-east of the town of El Charco in the southern Colombian province of Narino on the border with Ecuador. Colombia's Office for the Prevention of Disasters said that the earthquake was also felt in the central provinces of Caldas and Quindio and in the south-western Valle del Cauca and Cauca. Rescue workers said most of the damage was found in El Charco, where four people suffered slight injuries and around 20 houses were damaged (at least 12 of them totally destroyed). In the town of Mosquera, also in Narino, 12 more houses were suffered damage. Diego Gomez, director of Ingeominas in south-western Colombia, stressed that the quake is not directly linked to the activity of the Galeras volcano, which often causes tremors in the Narino province. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
