Chavez in surprise visit to Cuba

Havana - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez made a surprise visit to Havana on Tuesday at the invitation of recovering Cuban leader Fidel Castro, Cuban television reported. Left-wing populist Chavez was expected to meet with Fidel Castro and his younger brother Raul Castro, who took over as leader of the communist island in July 2006 to allow Fidel Castro to recover from surgery. 'Long live Cuba! Long live Fidel!' Chavez said upon arrival in Havana airport. Chavez was also met by Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage and Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque, among others. The Venezuelan president - one of the main allies of the Cuban government - last visited Cuba on January 29. Bolivian President Evo Morales also visited Castro last week, although no footage of the meeting was shown. Last week Castro, 80, appeared in his first televised interview during his 10-month recovery. The elderly Cuban leader was last seen in public on July 26, 2006. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
